Discover the new Tomato Route at Wim Peters Kwekerijen in Someren
How many kilograms of tomatoes are produced each year, and what natural enemy is used to control whitefly in greenhouses? Answers to these, and other questions, visitors will find out during the tomato route around Wim Peters Kwekerijen's greenhouses. This Saturday, September 14, from 10 a.m. to noon, this new route will be officially opened for hikers and nature lovers.
Tomato tour: a peek inside and outside the greenhouse!
The new walking tour offers a unique insight into Wim Peters Kwekerijen's greenhouses and the surrounding area. Along the way, visitors will learn about the history, the people behind the company, its cultivation and how it handles water, energy and nature.
Along the route are information boards with QR codes that provide access to videos and in-depth information on these topics. For the youngest visitors, a special scavenger hunt with Hummy the bumblebee starts at the Tomato Hut. With a scavenger card in hand, children can embark on a journey of discovery, playfully learning more about the fascinating life inside and outside the greenhouse. Tracking cards are available for different age groups.
Wim Peters on the new walking route: "Every day many people walk around our greenhouses, but few know what happens inside. With this walking route we want to give an interactive insight into our greenhouses and show what is involved in growing a delicious tomato. Sustainability and innovation are high on our agenda, and we would like to share this with a wider audience."
Grand opening
During the opening on Sept. 14, visitors can also taste several varieties of tomatoes from their own crops, and tomato recipes will be shared at the Tomato Hut on Hoge Akkerweg 10. The opening is open to all. An opening for the North Brabant Agricultural Innovation Fund will follow on Wednesday, Sept. 18. This steering committee will then meet at Wim Peters Kwekerijen along with business and policy makers from North Brabant. The theme of this meeting is sustainable horticulture, with attention to the environment and local biodiversity. A theme that fits seamlessly with the background of the new walking trail and the future vision of Wim Peters Kwekerijen.
The Landbouw Innovatiefonds Noord-Brabant contributed financially to the development of the Tomato Route. IVN Asten-Someren contributed its knowledge around the local flora and fauna of the area. This is not the first collaboration between the IVN and Wim Peters Kwekerijen; in 2023 a joint teaching program was set up around composting in 'worm hotels' at several elementary school in the municipality. Finally, mention should be made of Stichting Natuurlijk Someren, which played a role in setting out the route and placing signposts.
