Third edition Waste Market in Someren great success: children raise nearly €2000 for charity
The third edition of the Waste market at Wim Peters Kwekerijen in Someren on Wednesday evening, May 21, was a great success. Students from the Mariaschool and De Diamant organized the event themselves, from coming up with recipes to sales and promotion.
Family, friends and residents of Someren came in large numbers to the market and together purchased exactly €1955.51 worth of snacks and products that would otherwise be wasted. The aim of the event was to make children and visitors alike aware of food waste, with leftover products that would not normally end up on the shelves.
Charities
The proceeds go to charities chosen by the children. The Mariaschool chose Catharina Hospital, and the students of De Diamant chose Stichting De Vrolijkheid
Collaboration with local growers and businesses
The initiative was made possible by the support of Wim Peters Kwekerijen, which made the grounds available and participated in the organization. Companies including Jurrius, Moors Nurseries, Thwan van Gennip, Van Gog Nurseries, Van Lierop Ei, J.G. Leenders and Albert Heijn Kerkstraat also provided leftover produce.
SIRIS TV was on hand to report on the evening.
With the waste market, the children not only contribute to a more sustainable food system, but also gain valuable experience in collaboration, planning and entrepreneurship.
